FOREST HOUSE | constantia | western cape | proposal 2013

A family holiday home nestled in a forest remnant in Constantia. Mature trees and vegetation frame the East of the site, providing verdant refuge from neighbours. Open views North towards Devils Peak contrast with leafy forest to the South. The spatial layout creates two distinct spaces the forest clearing and the terrace orientated to the distant views. Interior and exterior spaces are woven to form a dynamic and changing spatial experience. Two heavy barn-like buildings, linked with light-weight timber and steel structures, articulate the house. The double-volume entry, stair, dining and gallery spaces puncture the living wing and provide views from the forest clearing to the mountain. The orientation facilitates passive low energy sustainable design. The envelope is crafted to harvest the seasons with deep verandas and shading screens, natural lighting and ventilation, low energy systems, and an ecological pool.
