KOGELBERG NATURE RESERVE CABINS | kogelberg biosphere | western cape | completed 2012

Cape Nature Conservation's Kogelberg Nature Reserve is a pristine mountain fynbos and wetland ecology and "heart" of the Unesco World Heritage - Kogelberg Biosphere. The creation of 5 new cabins, interpretation/recreation, ecological pool and outdoor spaces for a self-catering tourist facility, less than 100km from Cape Town. These replaced the existing timber cabins which were at the end of their lifespan. The scheme follows 'best environmental practise', working within the existing impacted footprint and integrating specialists' input to ensure minimal effect on the eco-systems. Restorative and re-generative strategies rehabilitate the ecological processes and locate the new cabins. Lightweight 'off-site' fabricated structures minimise on-site ground works. With carefully considered green infrastructure, the cabins cluster around a fynbos clearing, connecting visitors to the exquisite landscape.
