ARCHITECT'S STUDIO | observatory | cape town | completed 2006

This carefully planned double dwelling has an urban, high density feel appropriate to its location close to the City. The design makes the most of the relationship between buildings and garden, and integrates the house and studio with the lush courtyard garden and tranquil pool. Paramount to the design was the preservation of the existing oasis-like garden space. This led to a design strategy to limit the building footprint by creating double storey buildings along the perimeter of the site. The buildings were tailored to suit the environmental conditions - sheltering from prevailing SE winds, and screening from West summer sun. The use of natural light and ventilation and a simple palette of locally available material further re-iterates the sustainable low-impact approach of this project.
